it means reunion after a long separation,
and also a new beginning of a year!
People set off firecrackers and hang up red lanterns during the Spring Festival.
Children will receive lucky money.
Do you know the folklore about lucky money and firecrackers?
Let’s have a look!
Long long ago,
there was a kind of little monster called Sui.
It often haunts late at night on New Years Eve.
It likes to touch the head of sleeping children with its hands.
Children were often frightened to cry.
The next day, children would either have a fever and headache or become a fool.
A couple had a son in their fifties.
When the Eight Immortals passed by his house, they fortune-telling the disaster of the child,
so they became eight copper coins.
The couple wrapped the copper purse with red paper,
put it beside his pillow after the child fell asleep.
On New Years Eve, Sui just reached out to touch the childs head.
There was a golden light came out of the pillow.
It was scared and ran away.
The next day,
The old couple told the neighbors that the copper money wrapped in red paper could scare away Sui,
then every family would follow suit.
it gradually evolved into lucky money.
Lucky money is the blessing from the elders.
Hope that the children who get the lucky money
can live in peace for the new year!
Besides, according to the legend, there is another monster called Nian
often destroying crops.
On New Years Eve, it will go to the villages to eat people.
相传
It is said that,
on a New Year’s Eve night,
Nian almost ate up a whole villages.
Only at one house covered with red curtains,
do a couple of newlyweds in red survive death.
When Nian walked through a courtyard,
several children throw bamboos into the fire for fun.
The sound of firecracker was very loud and the flames were soaring into the sky,
Nian escaped in a panic.
Since then, people have known that Nian is afraid of red, light and noise.
So at the end of the year,
every household will post red paper and set off firecrackers.
In this way, the Nian will not dare to come again!
